Noah Senden (born in 1998 in Antwerp, Belgium) is a Belgian composer whose work spans contemporary classical music, vocal music, music theatre, film and other audiovisual media. Based in Ekeren, near Antwerp, he explores the possibilities of music through a personal musical language shaped by imagination, emotional depth and a curiosity about the world around him.

His music is driven by an interest in the relationship between sound, text and meaning. Poetry, nature, the passage of time and human experience regularly serve as starting points for his compositions. Rather than adhering to a single style, Senden seeks to develop a musical language that responds to the character of each project. His work moves between the concert hall, the stage and audiovisual media, with a particular interest in combining musical exploration with a direct emotional connection to the listener.

Education 

Noah Senden began studying harpsichord, piano and violin at the age of seven and started composing at ten. He studied composition at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, where Wim Henderickx was his principal teacher. He also studied with Bram Van Camp, Mathias Coppens, Luc Van Hove and Alain Craens.

An important part of Senden’s artistic development took place in Estonia. In 2020, he spent an Erasmus year at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in Tallinn, where he studied composition with Tõnu Kõrvits, one of Estonia’s distinctive contemporary composers, as well as with Helena Tulve and Toivo Tulev. Immersed in Estonia’s rich choral culture and distinctive contemporary music scene, Senden broadened his musical perspective beyond his Flemish education. He also sang in the academy’s choir under the direction of Tõnu Kaljuste, gaining first-hand experience of the Estonian choral tradition.

This period abroad became a formative part of his development as a composer, deepening his interest in vocal writing. He graduated with a Master’s degree in composition from the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp magna cum laude in 2021. His further studies have included masterclasses with composers such as Toshio Hosokawa, Thomas Adès, Pēteris Vasks and Nana Forte.

Compositions and awards

Noah Senden’s work as a composer and arranger has brought him into contact with a wide range of orchestras, ensembles and performers, including the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, HERMESensemble, SPECTRA, the Flemish Radio Choir, BRYGGEN Bruges Strings, Utopia Ensemble, ORLANDOviols, Casco Phil, I SOLISTI, Kugoni Trio, Desguin Quartet, Koi Collective and La Passione, as well as pianist and composer Jef Neve and composer and conductor Eric Whitacre.

In 2026, Senden became the first-ever Festival Composer of Musica Divina. For the festival, he created before we begin…, a composition that took on eight different forms through performances by various ensembles and musicians. One of its highlights was a performance by the Flemish Radio Choir conducted by Eric Whitacre. The work also evolved into an immersive sound installation in Averbode and a participatory musical experience at OPZ Geel.

His music theatre work includes WAPPER!, a production inspired by Antwerp folklore, created in collaboration with Clara Cleymans and musicians from Casco Phil. Combining music, storytelling and theatre, the production is touring Belgium in autumn 2026.

In January 2020, Senden won first prize in the Duo Kottos Composition Competition in London for 5 Visual Fragments. Another milestone was STATIO, his orchestral work performed by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra in the Queen Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp, in collaboration with Musica. For his graduation project in 2021, he created TRANSPORT XXI, an online music theatre production exploring human rights through a text by Johannes Wirix-Speetjens, with the support of Amnesty International.

Senden’s work also extends to film and audiovisual media. He composed music for Rise and Shine, a film by South African director Jeremiah Joél, and for projects including the video game Captain Cigarrr and several short films. His music has also featured in a national television campaign for VLAM.

In the field of choral music, Senden was festival composer for beVOICEd in 2025. His work A Letter to the Moon, written to a text by Lieze Denckens, brought together approximately 300 singers. Een nieuwe lente was selected the same year as a compulsory work for the European Music Festival for Young People in Neerpelt.

In October 2026, Senden received the Promising Talent Culture Award from Ekeren, his home town, in recognition of his work as a composer.

Musical Vision 

Senden’s musical language is shaped by a curiosity for sound, a fascination with the relationship between music and meaning, and a desire to create music that resonates with people. He is drawn to the subtle ways in which music can evoke images, convey emotions and open up new perspectives on familiar experiences.

His time studying in Estonia had a lasting influence on his musical development. The country’s rich choral tradition and distinctive contemporary music scene broadened his perspective on sound, harmony and musical expression. Together with his Flemish musical background, these experiences continue to inform his approach to composition.

Senden often begins with an idea beyond music itself: a poem, an image, an aspect of nature or a question about the human experience. From there, he searches for a musical language that grows naturally out of the subject. He is interested in how musical structures, recurring motifs, instrumental colours and the interaction between voices can give an idea its own identity. Rather than simply illustrating a text or concept, he aims to make music an essential part of its meaning.

His work moves between contemporary classical music, vocal music, music theatre and audiovisual media. Each field brings its own possibilities and challenges, but the underlying question remains the same: how can sound communicate something meaningful? He enjoys exploring unfamiliar combinations and musical approaches while remaining attentive to clarity, expression and the listener’s experience.

Senden believes contemporary music can be both challenging and accessible. It does not need to explain everything or offer a single interpretation. Instead, he wants his music to invite listeners into a world of its own, leaving room for imagination, discovery and personal connection. Ultimately, he hopes to create works that continue to reveal something new with each encounter.

Other Musical Passions 

Alongside his work as a composer, Senden teaches composition and music theory at the music academies of Brasschaat, Merksem and Kapellen. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for music while encouraging students to develop their own musical ideas and artistic voices.

His interest in music also extends to recording and sound production. Through personal projects and occasional professional work, he continues to explore the technical and creative possibilities of recording, an area in which he is keen to deepen his knowledge and experience.

During his conservatoire studies, Senden spent six years studying choral conducting with Luc Anthonis at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp and Hirvo Surva at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He subsequently worked with the youth choir Cantilene, including a performance as part of Koren voor C(H)ŒURS at the Royal Opera of Antwerp. He also conducted the string orchestra associated with the music academy of Ekeren.
